J/L Ranch Outfitter & Guides, Inc. is listing their guide business that operates through the Ashley National Forest in Utah’s Uintah Mountains. This is on the South slope and geographically South of Flaming Gorge Reservoir. This is a Special Use Priority Permit of 57,000 acres, with an elevation from 6,800 to 12,000 ft. peaks. J/L Ranch Outfitter & Guides, Inc. was the first permit holder in this area in 1987 and has the only Priority Use Permit.
Land
The vast area hosts over 80 lakes, countless springs, small creeks, and the breathtaking Whiterocks River next to J/L Ranch. 98 miles of scenic trails meander through alpine meadows to hidden lakes. There are three trailheads with good facilities to access this East-West range.
This area lies on the East border of the High Uintahs wilderness area and is managed as a Roadless Recreation Area. It is closed to motorized vehicles and some areas are closed to mountain biking. J/L Ranch has reserved camp sites in the most productive areas for fishing, hunting and sight seeing. There are many trails that can access lakes from 1-3 miles from roads end. Great for one day guided fly fishing trips.
J/L Ranch has been used as the headquarters for J/L Ranch Outfitter & Guides for many years. It was designed as a horse operation and for private show horses, and is also listed for sale and can be attached or sold separately: Link to property in the “Resources” section at the bottom of this listing.

Recreation
The area offers excellent Trout fishing, summer pack trips, trail rides, drop camps, and hunting for elk, mule deer, moose, goats, grouse and ptarmigan.
Whiterocks Canyon is ½ mile on the East side of J/L Ranch and it is the area’s crown jewel for scenery, wildlife viewing and fly fishing. Robert Redford filmed scenes here from the 1975 film, “Jeremiah Johnson.”
General Operations
A new owner could apply for a winter business permit and expand to hosting snowmobile and snow cat tours. A 20 mile “Elkhorn Loop Road” begins ½ mile West of J/L Ranch and has been popular with cabin guests. The Winter Olympics are coming back to Utah. The Ashley National Forest offered the owners this opportunity prior to the arrival of the Olympics in 2002. They are eager to show the world that this National Forest exists and has something to offer.
The owners are retiring and offering for sale with the business, lots of tack and camp equipment. No livestock. A list can be provided.
The transfer of the Special Use Permit will be signed by the District Ranger upon the sale of J/L Ranch Outfitter & Guides Inc. J/L Ranch and the Guide business can be purchased separately, but it is the expressed desire of the owners that the ranch and the business stay together.
