Bannack State Park Bannack, founded in 1862 after a gold discovery, became Montana's first Territorial Capital in 1864. Prospectors moved to Virginia City in search of gold in 1863, but some stayed in Bannack. The town thrived as a mining hub until the mid-20th century. Now a State Park, visitors explore the ghost town's preserved structures under Montana State Parks' jurisdiction.
