History Lake McConaughy in western Nebraska was constructed in the 1930s to store water for irrigation and to generate hydroelectric power. The project was a response to the economic depression and droughts of the era, which increased interest in irrigation. The dam and reservoir are named after George P. Kingsley, a banker from Minden, Nebraska, and C.W.
